Location: Karsamaki, Finland
Project: B1 Design proposal - Dalhousie
Typology: Civic/Cultural
Completed: Winter 2026
This project was developed as a case study counterpoint to the Karsamaki Shingle Church by OOPEAA. As a counterpoint, I explored how contemporary expression can emerge directly from tradition. I have proposed a community workshop centred around a woodcraft studio where the community can gather to teach, learn and pass down heritage, fostering an intergenerational exchange.
The design emphasizes progression. The inner building core containing the woodshop extrudes out from the building, symbolizing the emergence of modernity from tradition. Constructed with local wood using traditional techniques, the centre aims to embody the craft it celebrates, uniting heritage with innovation. The interplay between form, program and material weaves a narrative that continues the architectural story told at the Karsamaki Shingle Church.
